Taken on the morning of 3rd September 2005, this
image was captured from West Hill, opposite Corfe Castle. Getting in
position for the sunrise meant a 5am start and a steep climb in the dark
before reaching a suitable vantage point. The slight mist in the air
that morning gave an unusual orange tint to the sky which also held back
the harshness of the sun. This was one of a number of shots taken with a
zoom lens and filters but contrast problems before and after the sun was
at this point, meant the details were often lost in the foreground or
the sky became overexposed.
A Royalist stronghold during the English Civil War, Corfe Castle was
subsequently destroyed with explosives by the Parliamentarians with many
of the building materials used in the local properties. Corfe also
provides a stop on the Swanage Steam Railway and has many interesting
walks and buildings in and around its historic location.
